Grasonville, MD – A steady, all-around performance from Manhattan Golf resulted in a seventh place finish for the Jaspers at the Towson Spring Invitational this past weekend at the Prospect Bay Country Club.
The Jaspers ended the two-round tournament with a final score of 622 (+46), which was just 10 strokes off a top-three mark. The result, which was out of 15 teams, is Manhattan's sixth top-10 finish of its 2017-2018 campaign.
Senior
Charles Seward (Tampa, FL / Freedom) paced the Jaspers, shooting eight-over par to finish tied for 14th place. He improved by four strokes from Round One to Round Two as he carded a team-low score of 74 (+2) on Sunday. He averaged 3.13 and 4.25 strokes on par-three and par-four holes, respectively.
Classmate
Connor O'Rourke (Jupiter, FL / FAU) was also sharp in the second round. He kicked off the day with an eagle on the first hole, becoming one of just two golfers to score an eagle in the tournament. O'Rourke collected a 77 (+5) on Sunday and averaged a 2.88 score on par-three cups to place in the top 25.
Fellow upperclassmen
Johnny Schob (Huntington, NY / Salisbury School) and
Jon Keyes (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) were among the best golfers on par-five holes. The former had the best average score at 4.63, which equated to three-under par. Keyes was a stroke behind him at 4.75. Sophomore
Preston Shortell (Oxford, CT / Holy Cross) went even on par-five holes in his two rounds.
Senior
Ryan Lynch (Boynton Beach, FL / Park Vista) took part in the tournament as an individual and carded a +17 on the weekend.
St. Bonaventure took home the team title, finishing with a 603 (+27) over the weekend. Sacred Heart's Matt Shubley and Towson's Kobdech Rodrat tied for first individually at three-over par, but Shubley won the invitational tiebreaker with a birdie on the 18th hole.
Fairfield was the only other team from the MAAC to participate in the tournament. Manhattan finished seven strokes ahead of the Stags, who were ninth.
Manhattan Golf has just one more tournament before the MAAC Championship begins on Friday, April 20. The Jaspers return to the Old Line State on Saturday, April 14 to compete in the two-day Navy Invitational at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in Annapolis, MD.
