Lake Buena Vista, FL - For the second straight season, Manhattan Golf collected a third place finish in the MAAC Championships, with seniors
Connor O'Rourke (Jupiter, FL / FAU) and
Johnny Schob (Huntington, NY / Salisbury School) capturing All-MAAC honors at Disney's Magnolia Golf Course.
The Jaspers stayed consistent throughout the three-day tournament, carding a 306 in the first round on Friday and shooting a 298 in the final two rounds to finish 38-over par during the tournament, which was seven strokes off the lead.
O'Rourke was a staple of that consistency, as he was in the mix the entire weekend. He maintained a 73 (+1) the first two days and ended the tournament at six-over par, good for a share of fourth place. He collected eight birdies, including three on the back nine on Sunday, and an eagle in Round Two. In addition, he had the second- and third-best score on par 4 and par 5 holes, respectively, shooting five-over par on par-4 cups and four-under par on par-5 holes. It is the second straight year that O'Rourke was named to the All-MAAC team after he placed ninth in 2017.
Schob, meanwhile, was the best amongst his MAAC competitors in par-3 holes, going two-under par in that category. He earned his first career All-MAAC honor after he tied for sixth place at eight-over par. Schob was particularly effective early on in the tournament, compiling three birdies and one of just three eagles in the tournament in the first 27 holes. He never ended a round worse than four-over par.
Sophomore
Preston Shortell (Oxford, CT / Holy Cross) was third on the team and tied for 16th place overall at 12-over par. He improved his round score after every day, shooting 79, 76 and 73 in the tournament. Seniors
Charles Seward (Tampa, FL / Freedom) and
Jon Keyes (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) carded a +14 and +19 each to round out Manhattan's roster.
As a team, the Jaspers had the best score on par-4 holes, shooting a +49, and was second on par-5 cups at five-under par. Only Canisius totaled more than Manhattan's 155 pars in the tournament.
Iona (+31) won its fifth MAAC championship in program history, leading the pack after the first round. Siena settled for second place at 33-over par. The Saints' Michael Christifulli took home the McLeod Trophy as the top individual finisher and was named the 2018 MAAC Most Outstanding Performer, carding a 218 (+2) over the three rounds.
In addition, the MAAC announced the 2018 All-Academic Team.
Connor O'Rourke,
Charles Seward and
Preston Shortell represented Manhattan on the list. The Jaspers' three student-athletes were tied for second-most in the conference. To be eligible for the MAAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must complete two semesters at their institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
