Palm City, FL – Entering the third and final round just seven strokes off the lead, Manhattan Golf shot a collective 299 to overcome the University of Tampa and win the 2018 Fox Club Shootout.
This is the Jaspers' first tournament victory of the 2017-2018 campaign and the fourth top-five finish this season.
Senior
Jon Keyes (Bayport, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) led the way for Manhattan. His third round score of 75 (+3) helped him card a +18 in the tournament, good for second place. Classmate
Charles Seward (Tampa, FL / Freedom) finished behind him in fourth place at +22.
The tournament was a homecoming of sorts for senior
Connor O'Rourke (Jupiter, FL / FAU), who grew up about half an hour southeast of The Fox Club. He ended up moving into a tie for sixth place at +25.
Sophomore
Preston Shortell (Oxford, CT / Holy Cross) and senior
Johnny Schob (Huntington, NY / Salisbury School) helped Manhattan place all five scorers in the top 10. Shortell was ninth at 29-over par and helped his case by shooting a 74 (+2) on Tuesday. Schob had Manhattan's best individual round at 71 (-1) in round three.
Overall, the Jaspers shot +11 for a total score of 942. Tampa finished at 962 (+38). St. Francis Brooklyn rounded out the field at 55-over par. Manhattan's 299 in the third round was the lowest team score in a round over the two-day tourney.
The Jaspers have the rest of spring break off before they return to Florida to compete in the FAU Slomin Autism Invitational. The four-day tournament lasts from Friday, March 23 to Sunday, March 25.
