LOWELL, Mass. - The Manhattan women's lacrosse team earned an impressive 10-6 win over UMass Lowell at the Cushing Field Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Jaspers improve to 2-3 with the win, while the River Hawks fall to 0-5.
Manhattan leapt out to an early 3-0 lead in the opening 15 minutes and used a 6-1 run in the second half to put the game out of reach. Six different players found goal for the Jaspers in the outing.
Senior starting goalkeeper Christina Fiorinelli (Massapequa, N.Y. / Massapequa) played her best game of the year for Manhattan, recording a season-high 14 saves. She also collected a team-high four ground balls. Fiorinelli and junior captain Megan Yarusso (Brewster, N.Y. / Brewster) led the team with two caused turnovers apiece.
Offensively, junior captain Kaitlyn Cunningham (Spring Lake, N.J. / Red Bank Catholic), junior Claire Roediger (Katonah, N.Y. / Somers) and senior Donna Jo DiNorcia (Verona, N.J. / Verona) scored goals for the Jaspers over the opening 14:35 of the first stanza to provide the team with a 3-0 lead.
After freshman Taylor Sokol halted the Manhattan run, sophomore Darby Nolan (Oakridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township) notched her first goal of the season to make the score 4-1 Jaspers.
With the score 4-2 at the break, Manhattan opened the second half with back-to-back goals from freshman Kara Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J. / Jefferson Township) and Cunningham.
After freshman Kaylan DiModugno scored for the River Hawks, the Jaspers rattled off four straight goals to take a commanding 10-3 lead with 14:21 to play.
DiNorcia buried two goals over the spurt, while junior Stefanie Ranagan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y. / Yorktown) and Nolan also tallied for Manhattan.
Cunningham led the Jaspers with four points in the match, including two assists. Yarusso and Ranagan also picked up assists on the afternoon.
Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, March 14, when the team travels to Maryland for a meeting with UMBC. The opening draw control is slated for 2:30 p.m.
