RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's golf team closed out the 2010-11 season Sunday afternoon with a seventh place finish at the 2011 MAAC Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
Held at Disney's prestigious Magnolia Golf Course, the Jaspers concluded the nine-team tournament by recording team scores of 318 and 325 in the final two rounds after shooting an opening 312 on day one. Overall, Manhattan had a three-day total of 955. Loyola University won the event with a top score of 895, while Iona placed second at the completion of the contest by logging a 908 overall.
"Despite wanting to hang in a little closer to the top, there were some nice moments from the weekend of golf," Coach Walter Olsewski said. "The weather and course was beautiful, we had some solid efforts and we will look to build off of this result in the future."
On Saturday, Manhattan's top five golfers combined to shoot a 318 through 18 holes. Leading the way, freshman Chris Calabro impressed with a 3-over 75 in the second round. Also coming on strong through day two, senior Anthony Dinelli recorded a 78, with fellow classmate Matt Baney and freshman Paul Toohey amassing totals of 81 and 84, respectively. After a tremendous first day, top Jasper golfer Thomas Romano could not duplicate his effort the second time around, ending the morning with an 89.
Looking to cut the deficit on the final day of the invitational, Manhattan opened the final 18 with a renewed vigor but could not continue it on the back end in shooting a 325 to close out the event. Coming back with a superb final round of his collegiate career, Romano led all Jasper golfers with a 75. Also competing in his last event for Manhattan, Baney shot an 82 while Toohey ended his first season with an 83. Rounding out the scoring, Calabro and Dinelli completed the team totals with rounds of 85 and 90, respectively.
A season to remember, Manhattan finishes their campaign having won four tournaments, two dual matches and placing second in two invitationals. Along with those team achievements, Thomas Romano became the first Jasper golfer to be national ranked, receiving a placement of No.115 as designated by the Division I men's golf rankings.
