RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's golf team got off to a fast start on day one but could not duplicate their effort the second time around, finishing 13th at the Lafayette Invitational in Center Valley, Pa. this past weekend.
A two-day event at the Center Valley Golf Course, which featured 15 teams from the MAAC, Colonial and Northeast Conferences, the Jaspers shot a first round score of 311 but dropped to 331 on the final day of action to fall out of contention.
Iona placed first overall with a combined score of 589, with host-school Lafayette College (595) and Fairleigh Dickinson (602) finishing second and third, respectively.
"The team started in strong fashion but missed some opportunities down the stretch," Coach Walter Olsewski said. "We hit the ball well but our scoring needed to be better. Hopefully our return match with Saint Peter's this week will get us back on track."
Leading the way through the first round, junior Robert Kehoe, who finished 29th in the competition, and freshman Paul Toohey each shot a 76 through the initial 18 holes. Junior Pat Bibaud recorded a 79 with fourth-year member Matt Baney following one stroke behind him at 80.
In final round play, Kehoe continued his strong performance with a 78 Sunday while Toohey and Baney each logged scores of 84 on the final 18.
The Jaspers look to get back on track Tuesday, when they link up with MAAC foe Saint Peter's at Siwanoy Country Club. A tee-off time of 1 p.m. has been set.
