RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Leave it up to Mother Nature to cool off the Manhattan College golf team. In a tournament cut from 36 to 18 holes due to unplayable weather conditions, the Jaspers shot a first round score of 316 to finish eighth at the Rehoboth Beach Invitational Monday in Rehoboth, Del.
After winning their previous four events over the past two weeks, Manhattan battled through the wind and rain but was unable to top the stout competition at the 13-team event held at Kings Creek Country Club.
"We putted pretty well and hit some of the greens but just didn't play as well through the conditions as some of the other schools out there today," Coach Walter Olsewski said. "On the entire weekend, I am very satisfied with their play and I know the team is too."
For the Green and White, freshman Chris Calabro posted the team's best individual score with a 78, followed by fellow classmate Paul Toohey and junior Pat Bibaud's 79. Third-year member Robert Kehoe carded an 80 while sophomore Matthew Creamer ended the day with an 81.
The story of the day, was the outstanding play from the University of Maryland. The Atlantic Coast Conference member, won the invitational with a 281 total score. The Terrapins had four players shoot par or better on the course, including junior John Popeck's top overall score of 69. Host school, the University of Pennsylvania, finished in second place with a 295 combined total.
Manhattan College will take two weeks off before returning to the golf course on Oct. 5th to compete in their second head-to-head match with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Saint Peter's College. Tee off for the contest, held at the Rock Spring Club in West Orange, N.J. is set for 2:30 p.m.
