RIVERDALE, N.Y.- After dominating the field in their
previous two local matches, the Manhattan College golf team proved they could
bring their success on the road, finishing first on Saturday afternoon at the
2010 Susquehanna University Fall Golf Invitational in Hummels Wharf, Pa.
The Jaspers, who won back-to-back matches this week at the
Purchase College Invitational and in a head-to-head contest against conference opponent Saint.
Peter's College, shot a combined 315 to win the 14-team tournament held at the
Susquehanna Valley Country Club.
Consisting of local colleges from the greater Pennsylvania
area, Manhattan rallied from an uneventful front nine to end play two strokes ahead
of runner-up Pennsylvania State University- Harrisburg's 317 final, and three in
front of host school Susquehanna University (318).
“I am thrilled with the performance today. We weren't sure
how the results would turn out but after finishing the round quickly, we
thought we had a chance to win, coach Walter Olsewski said. “Despite
changing personnel the last few outings, the team continues to go out and compete extremely well.”
On this day, Manhattan was led by two underclassmen who have
played well beyond their years in the early season. Sophomore Matthew Creamer shot a
75 through the 18 holes, good for a second place tie overall, while freshman Paul
Toohey was one stroke behind with a 76. Contributing to the top score, fellow
classmate Chris Calabro and junior Pat Bibaud each posted an 82 with third-year member Robert Kehoe logging an 87.
Wilkes University's Bob Hillibush had the best individual
score, shooting a 74.
Manhattan College will have a scheduled practice day Sunday (Sept. 25th) before Monday's (Sept. 26th) Rehoboth Beach Invitational at Kings Creek Country Club in
