RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The good times continue to roll for the Manhattan College golf team; on the green that is. After last week's record-tying performance at the Blue Devils Fall Invitational, the Jaspers followed it up with a first place finish at the St. Joseph's Fall Invitational in Middle Village, N.Y. It was their third-straight victory at the event.
The local competition, featuring teams from across the Tri-State area, was dominated from the opening hole on by Manhattan. For the afternoon, the five-member unit shot a combined 306, 14 strokes ahead of runner-up Farmingdale State University, which finished the day with a total score of 320.
Played at the Spring Lake Golf Club, the Green and White were led by two underclassman in sophomore Matthew Creamer and freshman Paul Toohey. The duo shot an even-par score of 72, good for the Lowest Gross Medalist honors on the afternoon. Another youth finishing the day with a strong score was newcomer Chris Calabro, who logged a 75. A possible changing of the guard, the results marked the second straight week in which the lowest scorer was neither a junior or senior.
"Another fantastic effort by our team on the course. Today was about as close as we have ever come to having three guys shoot for par," coach Walter Olsewski said.
The upcoming week will be a true test for Manhattan College as they participate in two difficult head-to-head matches. On Tuesday, Sept. 21st, the team heads to Purchase, N.Y. to participate in the Purchase College Golf Invitational. On Wednesday, Sept. 22nd, the Jaspers will host Saint Peter's College in a match at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y. The tee off for both days is set for 2 p.m.
