RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The Manhattan College golf team played their best round of the 2010 season Monday, shooting a school-record tying 297 to finish fifth at the Blue Devils Fall Invitational in Wethersfield, Conn.
After compiling a team score of 309 Sunday, the Jaspers picked up the pace in the second round and made some history in the process. The five-man unit combined for a total of 297, the best Non-MAAC one round tournament score since 2001, when they competed at the St. Thomas Aquinas Invitational.
"We played a fantastic round. Only a few shots that didn't hit the green on drives, we made sure we didn't face difficult situations and rebounded nicely when we did," Coach Walter Olsewski said.
"A truly great effort and to finish fifth is quite an accomplishment."
A two-day tournament, Manhattan was led by freshman Paul Toohey who recorded a 75 today but finished with another school-record tying 148 total after both rounds. Toohey's mark puts him in rare company as the Lowest Gross Medalist in a Non-MAAC event, also first accomplished in '01.
On the afternoon, Manhattan senior Thomas Romano led all Jaspers with a low score of 71. Following his efforts, Toohey and fellow freshman Chris Calabro each logged a 75 while senior Matt Baney and Robert Kehoe ended the day with a 76 and 86 respectively.
The Green and White will head back towards Riverdale to compete at the St. Joseph's Fall Invitational in Middle Village, N.Y. on Friday. The teams will tee off at 11:30 a.m.
