RIVERDALE, N.Y.- The Manhattan College golf team ended their fall season on a high note Monday, finishing tied for second place at the Penmen Invitational in North Sutton, N.H.
Sponsored by Southern New Hampshire University, the eight-school and two-day tournament consisted of golf teams from the New England and Greater New York regions. Assumption College, University of Massachusetts-Lowell and Franklin Pierce University were among those selected for the competition.
The last match in a tremendous start to the 2010-11 golf season, the Jaspers left the Country Club of New Hampshire feeling as though they had grown immensely and are confident they'll be able to compete with the best in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference come spring.
"The guys played well out there today," Coach Walter Olsewski said. "It was cold out there and the ball didn't travel as far but the score was solid overall. We are very happy with the fall season performance and think it boded well for our future."
Shooting almost identical scores in the two rounds, 314 total on Sunday and 319 total on Monday, Manhattan battled the temperatures and put together a nice effort but their 633 final wasn't enough to take down Assumption College's 631 end result.
Picking up the pace in round two, senior Anthony Dinelli and junior Pat Bibaud each logged a 77 to lead all Manhattan golfers. Two emergining underclassmen followed as sophomore Matthew Creamer and freshman Chris Calabro completed action with matching 80 finals. Third-year golfer Robert Kehoe posted an 82.
UMass Lowell shot a 633 combined to end the invitational deadlocked with Manhattan while Franklin Pierce finished one stroke behind at 634.
