Wappingers Falls, NY - Manhattan captured a series victory over Lehigh thanks to splitting a doubleheader at Dutchess Stadium, winning game one by a 10-2 count before dropping a 6-4 decision in the nightcap.
The Jaspers are now 6-14 while the Mountain Hawks are 7-14.
Game 1 Recap:
Junior Joey Rocchietti (Green Brook, NJ / Watchung) struck out four over 6.1 solid innings and all nine regulars reached base safely as Manhattan posted a decisive 10-2 victory over Lehigh in game one.
The Jaspers grabbed control of the game with five runs in the pivotal third inning while batting around. Senior Christian Santisteban (Miami, FL / Gulliver Prep) opened the scoring with a bases-loaded walk that forced in classmate Chris Reynolds (Wall, NJ / St. Rose), who had opened the frame with a single through the left side. The visitors were then forced to the pen and junior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) greeted reliever Frank Rosetti with a run-scoring single that plated sophomore Anthony Rondon (Miami, FL / Mater Academy Lakes). Freshman Richie Barrella (Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) added a two-run single to center field before sophomore Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) capped the scoring with a RBI single to right field.
After failing to get a runner to third base in the first 13 innings of the series, the Mountain Hawks finally broke through in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. David Young led off with a double before Connor Donovan followed with a run-scoring double of his own. Donovan would later come around to score on Mackey Price's sacrifice fly to trim the deficit to 5-2.
Manhattan immediately got one of those runs back in the bottom part of the frame. Santisteban, Carrera and freshman Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) all singled to load up the bases with no outs. Junior Joe Credendino (Wappingers Falls, NY / OCC) then drew a two-out walk to force in Santisteban while stretching the lead out to 6-2.
The Jaspers would put the game out of reach one inning later with a four-run sixth in opening up a 10-2 advantage. Sophomore Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) began the scoring with a one-out triple before crossing the plate a wild pitch. Later in the frame, Pena smoked a two-run double and Pfenninger capped the scoring with a RBI triple.
Rocchietti (2-3) earned the win, yielding just two runs on four hits and a walk and has now gone at least six innings in each of his last three outings. Sophomore LHP Steve Arntsen (Manorville, NY / Eastport-South Manor) and freshman Ryan Takacs (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) finished off the win for Rocchietti with 2.2 innings of one-hit relief.
Pena paced a Manhattan attack that rapped out 10 hits and drew nine walks, finishing up 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two RBI. Carrera went 2-for-4 with two runs while Pfenninger was 2-for-4 with two RBI to round out the multi-hit performers for the Jaspers.
Donovan was 3-for-4 with a double while having a hand in both Lehigh runs to pace the Mountain Hawks while Kevin Long (0-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs over 2.0 innings.
Game 2 Recap:
Lehigh overcame a three-run deficit to defeat Manhattan 6-4 and salvage the final game of this weekend's non-conference series.
Manhattan picked up right where it left off in game with two quick first-inning runs. Santisteban got things going with a one-out single before moving to third on a Carrera double. Pena followed with a run-scoring single that plated Santisteban before Carrera crossed the plate on a Barrella sacrifice fly.
The Mountain Hawks got on the board in the fourth on a Donovan RBI ground out.
Lehigh would again threaten in the fifth, putting runners on second-and-third with one out only to see junior LHP Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, NJ / Red Bank Regional) induce a pop out before picking up an inning-ending strikeout.
Jacques would then work a perfect sixth, capping a solid performance that saw the lefty strike out five while yielding just one run on three hits over 6.0 innings.
The Jaspers extended the lead out to 4-1 in the bottom part of the frame when Rondon belted two-run double that plated Barrella and Pfenninger.
Unfortunately, the Mountain Hawks plated three runs in the top of the seventh in tying the game at 4-4. Lehigh would then score a pair of unearned runs in the ninth in capping a come-from-behind 6-4 victory.
Santisteban was 3-for-4 with a double, walk and run while Carrera went 2-for-3 with a double and a run to lead Manhattan in game two.
Junior RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, NJ / St. Joseph Regional) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding two unearned runs over 2.2 innings of relief.
Mike Garzillo, Jacen Nalesnik and Young all had a pair of hits to pace Lehigh while combining for four runs and four RBI.
Mark Washington earned the win, striking out two over 2.1 hitting innings while Kevin Boswick picked up the save thanks to inducing a game-ending double play grounder.
The Jaspers return to action when it hosts a doubleheader against Monmouth on Saturday, April 2 with first pitch slated for 12:00 pm.
