WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. - Sophomore LHP Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J. / Red Bank Regional) fired a 7.0-inning, two-hit shutout with a career-high eight strikeouts in game two while junior Christian Santisteban (Miami, Fla. / Gulliver Prep) went 4-for-5 on the day with three doubles and two walks in leading Manhattan to a doubleheader split with Niagara at Dutchess Stadium.
The Jaspers claimed game two by a 7-0 score after dropping the opener by a 7-2 count in moving to 12-27 and 6-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) while the Purple Eagles are now 10-21-2 and 7-7 in the league.
Game 2
Manhattan rolled to a 7-0 victory over Niagara in the second game behind a dominant effort from Jacques. The hard-throwing lefty didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning while the offense plated four runs in the first and never looked back.
"I thought Joe was great today," said head coach Jim Duffy. "He took advantage of a well-deserved opportunity and more importantly picked up his team after a tough loss. That was the most dominating pitching performance we have had this season."
After Jacques worked around a leadoff error in the top of the first, the Jasper offense got to work quickly. Sophomore Matt Forlow (Cold Spring, N.Y. / Haldane) blooped a one-out single before taking second on a passed ball. Senior Chris Kalousdian (Fort Salonga, N.Y. / Kings Park) then opened the scoring with a double to deep left center. Santisteban followed with a run-scoring single to extend the lead out to 2-0. Following a fielder's choice grounder, senior Joe McClennan (Highland Mills, N.Y. / Cornwall Central) stole second before coming around to score on Jason Patnick's (So., Hopewell, N.J. / IMG Academy (Fla.) RBI single. Patnick followed suit with a stolen base and was plated on senior Vin Teixeira's (Hamden, Conn. / Hamden Hall Country Day) bloop single while capping Manhattan's four-run frame.
The Jaspers added to the lead with two more runs in the third. Santisteban led off with a walk before moving to third on a McClennan double to center field. Patnick then chased home Santisteban with a sacrifice fly while pushing McClennan to third before the latter scored when Mikey Miranda (Sr., Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) reached via an error.
Manhattan would cap the scoring with a run in the fourth. Kalousdian got aboard with a single before scoring when Santisteban cracked his third double of the day with a shot down the left field line.
After a first-inning threat, Jacques set Niagara down in order over the next four innings before Tyler Lau broke up his no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the sixth.
Jacques would keep the visitors off the scoreboard by inducing an inning-ending double play grounder before working around a two-out single in the seventh to close out his second career shutout.
All told, Jacques (2-1) struck out a career-high eight, against just two hits and a walk, while facing three over the minimum in his seven-inning masterpiece.
Manhattan rapped out 10 hits with the first seven batters in the line-up each hitting safely.
Freshman Brendan Bisset (New City, N.Y. / Don Bosco Prep (N.J.)), Kalousdian and Santisteban each notched two hits while to lead the way.
RHP Ben Zaccagnino (0-4) allowed four runs on six hits in being saddled with the loss.
Game 1
Niagara scored all seven of its runs with two outs and broke a seventh-inning deadlock with a pair of runs before adding three more in the eighth to defeat Manhattan 7-2 in the series opener at Dutchess Stadium.
The Jaspers struck first with a run in the second inning. McClennan led off with his second triple of the year to left-center before freshman Michael Pfenninger (Flemington, N.J. / Hunterdon Central) plated him with an infield single.
After the Purple Eagles threatened to score in each of the next two frames, the visitors finally broke through in the fourth. Anthony Firenzi led off with a single before eventually scoring on Geoff Soto's two-out double to left-center.
Niagara then took its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth on Michael Furhman's two-out, run-scoring single to left field. However, the damage could have been worse but freshman LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, N.Y. / Monsignor Farrell) stranded a pair of runners by inducing an inning-ending ground out to first.
In the bottom part of the frame, the Jaspers immediately got that run back with a two-out rally. Kalousdian delivered a two-out single through the right side before moving to second on a four-pitch walk to Santisteban. McClennan followed with a single up the middle to plate Kalousdian while tying the game up at 2-2.
The Purple Eagles threatened in the sixth only to be denied by Cosgrove, who capped his first career MAAC start with a no-decision. The Staten Island native allowed just two runs on nine hits with six strikeouts, against just one walk.
Once Cosgrove exited, the visitors preyed upon the Manhattan bullpen over the next two frames, scoring five runs on six hits en route to posting the aforementioned 7-2 victory.
McClennan reached safely in all four trips to the plate (2-for-2, 2 HBP) while Kalousdian notched a pair of doubles to pace a six-hit Manhattan attack.
Firenzi and Brophy each had four hits to lead the way for Niagara.
Zach Kolodziejski (6-2) earned the win, yielding two runs on six hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts over 6.0 innings. Matt McCuen notched his first career save with 3.0 innings of one-hit relief.
Sophomore RHP Shawn Kanwisher (Washington Township, N.J. / St. Joseph's Regional) was saddled with the loss in falling to 2-1.
The teams will conclude their series on Sunday, April 26 with a single game at 12 p.m.
