NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Manhattan got back on track Wednesday, picking up a 2-0 victory over conference rival Iona in New Rochelle. The victory raises the Jaspers record to 3-4-3, including 2-1-2 in MAAC play.
Coach Lawler was excited about his team's efforts saying, "Roller coaster of a game and huge huge win! Great start to the game and when we needed to show our heart and character at the end we did."
Manhattan struck early, when Julia Nicholas obtained possession from Iona, and dribbled down the right side of the field, before striking one into the left side of the net in the 8th minute. The score remained 1-0 through the half with limited scoring opportunities for both sides. In the 59th minute, Iona earned a corner kick that was retrieved and shot by Kayla Thomas for a goal to knot the game up at 1-1. From this point forward it seemed Iona gained the momentum from the Jaspers. However, a combination of good defense and goalkeeping kept the Jaspers tied until the last two minutes when momentum turned back in the Jaspers favor. In the 89th minute, a foul on Iona was called in the box, allowing Manhattan to attempt a penalty shot to take the lead with one minute remaining. Kaitlyn Cooke was chosen to attempt the shot and she did not let down. She was able to find the bottom right corner, securing a late victory for the Jaspers.
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded five saves in six opportunities. The Jaspers had three players attempt multiple shots today.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded three corner kicks and had four shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch Saturday, October 7, when they travel to Lawrenceville, to take on Rider in another conference battle.
