JERSEY CITY, NJ - Manhattan recorded a crucial conference victory today 2-1 over Saint Peter's in Jersey City. The win lifted the Jaspers season record to 4-7-3, including 3-4-2 in MAAC play.
Coach Lawler recognizes the significance of this win saying, "Huge result on the road to keep our playoff hopes alive. Created a lot of great chances and very proud of our effort."
The Jaspers came out of the gates firing, stringing together two goals within a minute of each other. In the 17th minute, Reina Callahan fired a pass to Sami Derrico, who was able to strike the ball into the lower right corner of the goal to start the game off in Manhattan's favor. Manhattan continued to attack, as in the 18th minute, Derrico found herself involved again, this time dishing to Amrit Arora who was able to find the bottom right corner of the net, quickly giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead.
With Manhattan trying to protect their lead, the score held at 2-0 until the 75th minute when a penalty was called in the box, giving Saint Peter's a penalty kick that Joana Dias was able to convert for a goal, pushing the score to 2-1. Manhattan was able to play mistake free from that point forward, securing the Jaspers the 2-1 victory.
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded nine saves in ten opportunities. Arancha Antunes and Olivia McMaster both attempted three shots today.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded one corner kick and had eight shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch Wednesday, October 25, when they return home to Riverdale to take on Quinnipiac in their final game of the regular season.
