RIVERDALE, NY - In a must win game to keep their season alive, Manhattan drew 2-2 with conference regular season champs Quinnipiac. This game concludes the season for Manhattan women's soccer. The Jaspers wrap up the season with a record of 4-7-4 including 3-4-3 in MAAC play.
"Though we fell short of advancing, we couldn't be prouder of how our team stepped up against the best team in our conference," said Coach Lawler. "It was a great performance and we are already looking forward to next year. It will be difficult without Kaitlyn and Izzy but they will always be with us!"
Quinnipiac set the tone in the 21st minute when Emily Vliet recorded a goal on a deflection from a prior save. The Jaspers, however, were not going to back down. They came back and attacked, with some good team ball. Olivia McMaster led Sami Derrico down the sideline with a perfect pass. Derrico was able to find Nicolette Caneda in the center of the field who gave it the perfect touch to find the back of the net.
The game remained 1-1 until the 57th minute when the Bobcat's Lily Schnieders was able to find the bottom left corner of the net, assisted by Rachel Roman. Manhattan continued to fight, knowing what was at stake. In the 82nd minute, Derrico shot another pass down the sideline, this time to Arancha Antunes who scored a deep goal from the left sideline, tying the game once again, 2-2. After an aggressive attack, knowing they needed to win, Manhattan was not able to find another scoring opportunity, resulting in a 2-2 draw.
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded seven saves in nine opportunities. Corinne Jackson recorded two shots for the Jaspers.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded three shots on goal collectively.
Manhattan comes out as the only team in the MAAC, not to take a defeat to Quinnipiac, but still concludes the season 7th place in the MAAC, one spot and point short of a berth in the conference tournament.
