RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team took a 2-1 defeat to visiting Niagara at home today, following the Jaspers senior day celebrations. The loss sets the Jaspers back to 3-7-3, including 2-4-2 in conference play.
"We played quality soccer and created dangerous chances," said head coach Brendan Lawler. "Our seniors and their teammates gave everything to get a positive result today. It didn't go our way but we are very proud of them!"
Manhattan struck first in the 16th minute, when a free kick by Kaitlyn Cooke, deflected off of Olivia McMaster, in the perfect spot for Talie Omer to recover it and strike it in for a goal to take a 1-0 lead. Niagara answered in the 29th minute with a goal from Sophia Guagliano. Shortly afterwards, in the 41st minute a penalty was called in the box, resulting in a Niagara penalty kick which was converted by Emily Hahnel to give Niagara a 2-1 lead. The second half featured a few opportunities for the Jaspers but ultimately remained a scoreless half, resulting in a 2-1 Niagara victory.
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded six saves in eight opportunities. Olivia McMaster led the team in shots recording five.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded four corner kicks and had five shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch Wednesday, October 18, when they travel to Jersey City to take on Saint Peter's at 3 p.m.
