Ann Arbor, MI – Lefty Tommy Henry struck out five while yielding just two hits over 6.0 scoreless innings in lifting No. 23 Michigan to a 5-1 win over Manhattan in the opener of a four-game series at Ray Fisher Stadium.
The Jaspers fall to 4-10 while the Wolverines improve to 10-4.
Michigan opened the scoring with a single run in the third inning as Blake Nelson led off with a double, before scoring on Jack Blomgren's RBI double.
The Wolverines added to the lead with two runs in the fifth inning, before notching single scores in the sixth and eighth in pushing the advantage out to 5-0.
Manhattan would get one run back in the ninth inning as sophomore
Matt Padre (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) was plunked, before scoring on
Alex Cerda's (Jr., Miami, FL / Florida Christian School) RBI double.
Cerda finished up 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI to lead the way for the Jaspers.
Senior RHP
Ryan Takacs (Jackson, NJ / Jackson Memorial) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding three runs on six hits over 5.0 innings.
Nelson was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI to pace a nine-hit Michigan attack.
The teams will resume their series on Friday, March 15 at 4:00 pm.
