Manhattan Falls At Canisius

Box Score (PDF)

Buffalo, NY -
Emily Czechowski's goal in the 61st minute lifted Canisius to a 1-0 win over Manhattan at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins improve to 4-3-1 and 1-1-0 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 1-4-2 and 0-1-1 in the league.

Manhattan had a pair of golden opportunities to find the back of the net, only to be thwarted on by both plays by Canisius goalie Alana Rossi.

After both teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening stanza, the Golden Griffins scored what would prove to be the lone goal of the match off a corner kick. Melanie Linsmar received the kick before heading it to Czechowski, who fired it into the corner of the net for her first score of the year.

In the 67th minute, senior Victoria Reis (Rockville Centre, NY / South Side) blasted a ball from 30 yards out of a Tia Painilainen (So., Espoo, Finland / Arizona) corner kick that Rossi was able to snare.

Senior Caroline Taylor (Glen Rock, NJ / Glen Rock) also got a shot on goal in the 81st minute before classmate Nicole Copping (Blue Point, NY / Bayport-Blue Point) missed wide in the left in the 86th minute as Canisius was able to withstand a late-charging Jasper squad.

NOTES
* Manhattan had its sixth different starting line-up as the season as junior Camryn Nici (Seaford, NY / St. Anthony's) made her first career start in goal and recorded one save in a half of action.

* Junior Olivia Printy (Ponte Vedra Beach, FL / St. Joseph Academy) played the second half in goal and made five saves in defeat.

* Reis, Copping, Painilainen and freshman Olivia Maldonado (Babylon, NY / Babylon) have started all seven matches.

* Canisius posted advantages in shots (12-8), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (6-1).

* Five of the Jaspers' seven matches have now been decided by one goal or less.
