NEW YORK – On Saturday morning, the Manhattan College volleyball team continued action at the Columbia Classic with a matchup against SIU Edwardsville.  In their first of two matches on the day, the Jaspers (0-9) suffered a 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 loss to the Cougars (5-3) at Columbia's Levien Gymnasium.

The Jaspers jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set before SIU Edwardsville scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 10-6.  After an Olyvia Chaltas (Temecula, CA) kill brought Manhattan within 10-9, the Cougars responded with three straight to bring the margin back to four, 13-9.  The Jaspers trimmed the deficit to two at 13-11, but SIU Edwardsville ended the set on a 12-3 rally to secure a 25-14 win.

After SIU Edwardsville went up 3-2 in the second set, Manhattan captured the next three points to pull in front, 5-3.  The Cougars responded with a 9-3 run to take a 12-8 lead before the Jaspers pulled within one at 14-13 on a Zoe Lindsey (McHenry, IL) service ace.  SIU Edwardsville countered with six straight points to push its advantage back to seven, 20-13, but the Jaspers again battled back, trimming the margin to three at 22-19.  The Cougars claimed the next three points, though, to wrap up a 25-19 set win.

In the third set, SIU Edwardsville opened up an early 7-2 advantage.  The Jaspers, however, stormed back with 10 of the next 14 points, getting within 14-13 on a Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, HI) block.  After a Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) kill made it 17-16 SIU Edwardsville, the Cougars went on a 4-1 rally to go up 21-17.  A Behrens ace brought Manhattan back within one at 23-22, prompting an SIU Edwardsville timeout.  The Cougars got a Jackie Scott kill out of the timeout to set up match point, and Kiana Fields ripped a kill on the next point to seal the set, 25-22, and the contest, 3-0, for SIU Edwardsville.

Chaltas paced the Jaspers offensively for the second straight match.  She slammed 11 kills and hit .318, making just four errors in 22 attempts.  Janjusevic added nine kills, while Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, HI) registered 10 digs.  Lindsey distributed 23 assists for Manhattan, which hit .120 (28-17-92) as a team.

For the Cougars, Taylor Jones led the way with kills on .435 hitting.  Emily Harrison, meanwhile, had eight kills and hit .467.  Katie Shashack collected 12 digs, as SIU Edwardsville outdug Manhattan 41-29.  Mallory Mangun handed out 23 assists to go along with two aces, and Samantha Knight finished with 16 assists.  As a team, SIU Edwardsville hit .314 (50-18-102) in the match.
