PHILADELPHIA – On Thursday afternoon, the Manhattan College women's track & field team took part in the college distance medley at the 122nd edition of the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field. With an intermittent rain falling, the quartet of Alexa Roda (Staten Island, NY), Kathy Cadet (Endicott, NY), Kelly Gorman (South Amboy, NJ) and Erin Spadaccini (Wilmington DE) placed second overall in a school-record time of 11:48.28. Manhattan had the 10th-fastest clocking all teams in the event, including both the college race and the Championship of America.
After Roda led off with a solid 1200-meter time of 3:39.73, Cadet ran the fastest 400-meter split of the race, 56.75 seconds. Gorman took the lead midway through the 800-meter leg and handed off to Spadaccini in second place. Gorman's split was 2:14.69. Spadaccini then moved into the lead on the final lap of the 1600-meter anchor leg, but was passed on the home stretch by Army West Point's Abby Halbrook. Her time of 4:57.11 was a personal best.
The Jaspers broke the school record in the event by nearly 10 seconds. The previous mark was 11:58.20, set at the 1988 Colonial Relays.
Manhattan will continue action at the Penn Relays with a number of events on Friday. The Jaspers will also begin competition at the College of New Jersey's Lions Invitational.
