Jaspers Suffer First Loss of Season at Towson

TOWSON, Md. – After opening the Towson Invitational with a pair of wins on Friday, the Manhattan College volleyball team was back in action against the host Tigers on Saturday afternoon.  Towson (1-1) took a tightly-contested first set before pulling away for a 25-21, 25-15, 25-14 victory over the Jaspers (2-1) at SECU Arena.

The Jaspers got off to a good start, jumping out to an early 6-2 advantage in the first set on a block by Milena Janjusevic (Belgrade, Serbia) and Casey Monroe (Riverview, Fla.).  Towson rallied to go up 9-8, but Manhattan responded with three straight points to regain the lead, 11-9.  However, the Tigers countered with a 9-4 run to build an 18-15 cushion.  After Manhattan pulled within one at 21-20, Towson scored four of the final five points to capture the set, 25-21.

Towson began the second set on an 8-1 spurt and ran the margin to 14-6 before the Jaspers registered three points in a row to get within five, 14-9.  However, another 10-4 rally by the Tigers made it 23-13, and Towson went ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-15 set win.

There were five ties early in the third set.  After a Janjusevic kill forced a 6-6 deadlock, Towson rattled off five consecutive points to take an 11-6 lead.  An Ivana Kostic (Grocka, Serbia) kill halted the rally, but the Tigers claimed 11 of the next 13 points to open up a 22-9 cushion.  The Jaspers ended the responded with a 5-2 run before Towson closed out the set, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.

Kostic had nine kills to pace the Jaspers, while Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.) finished with six kills and six digs.  Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) and Alyssa Rehrer (Lorton, Va.) collected seven digs apiece, and Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) notched seven digs to go along with 12 assists.  Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) handed out eight assists for Manhattan, which hit .076 (27 kills, 19 errors, 105 attempts) as a team.

Jocelyn Kuilan tallied a match-high 12 kills for Towson, and Haley Pa'akula had nine kills to go along with 14 kills and three blocks.  Anna Holehouse also recorded 14 digs, as the Tigers outdug the Jaspers 49-40.  Aimee Schubert distributed 20 assists, while Kyana Miller added 12 assists.  As a team, Towson hit .225 (38-15-102) in the match.

Manhattan concludes the tournament with another match on Saturday.  The Jaspers take on Delaware State (0-2) at 4:45 p.m.
