Jaspers Upended by Brown

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Manhattan men's lacrosse team dropped a non-conference contest to Brown, 22-9, at Stevenson Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 0-9 (MAAC 0-1), while the Bears improve to 6-1 (Ivy 1-0).

Brown entered the match as the second highest scoring team in the country, averaging 15.17 goals per game, with the nation's leading scorer in sophomore Dylan Molloy (5.17 goals per game).

The Bears used two separate lengthy runs in the first half, one of 7-0 and the other 4-0, to take a commanding 11-2 lead at the halftime break.

The Jaspers scored the first goal of the afternoon 2:59 in, when senior co-captain Marcel Godino (Summit, N.J. / Summit) beat Bears' junior goalkeeper Jack Kelly. Senior Andrew Hurst (Babylon, N.Y. / Babylon) was credited with an assist on the play.

Manhattan next scored 5:59 into the second quarter, when junior Jimmy Rogers (Annapolis, Md.) tallied a man-up goal.

Brown outscored the Jaspers 8-3 in the third quarter, but the final frame proved to be different, with Manhattan outscoring the Bears 4-3.

In the third quarter, freshman Andrew Gresham (Pitt Meadows, B.C., Canada / Pitt Meadows Secondary) netted two of his four goals on the afternoon, while Hurst added one goal.

The Jaspers began the fourth quarter on a 3-0 run, when Godino buried a goal 1:54 in. Gresham followed with back-to-back goals over the next five minutes in what proved to be the best performance of the freshman's collegiate career. He finished the game with five points (4G, 1A).

Senior co-captain Kevin Cox (Brightwaters, N.Y. / Bayshore) scored the final Manhattan goal of the game with 5:57 to play.

Gresham led the team in scoring, while Godino (2G, 1A) and Hurst (1G, 2A) added balance to the Jaspers' attack.

Freshman defender Frank Merrill (Mountain Lakes, N.J. / Mountain Lakes) picked up six ground balls and caused two turnovers to pace Manhattan in both categories. Junior defender Darien Bica (Irvington, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry) collected four ground balls on the day.

Freshman goalkeeper Michael Zingaro (Cortland Manor, N.Y. / Walter Panas) made 14 saves in the outing.

 

The Jaspers return to action on Saturday, March 28, when they travel to Michigan for a 12 p.m. bout with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Detroit.
