STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Manhattan College volleyball team took a break from Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) action with a visit to Stony Brook on Wednesday night.  The Jaspers (8-7) battled back to force a fourth set after dropping the first two, but the Seawolves (10-8) ultimately came away with a 25-23, 25-22, 18-25, 25-17 victory at Pritchard Gymnasium.

There were 12 ties and four lead changes in a very tight first set.  Manhattan opened up an 11-8 advantage before Stony Brook countered with an 8-4 run to go in front 16-15.  The Jaspers regained the lead on a kill by Teodora Peric (Chicago, Ill.) and a Malia McGuinness (Kailua, Hawaii) block, then extended their cushion to 19-17 on a Marissa Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) kill.  Stony Brook scored three of the next four points to force a 20-20 deadlock, and it would be tied three more times before the Seawolves earned the first set point at 24-23.  Stephanie McFadden then slammed a kill to give Stony Brook the set, 25-23.

In the second set, Stony Brook jumped out to a 9-6 lead before the Jaspers responded with four of the next five, evening the score at 10-10 on back-to-back service aces by Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.).  However, the Seawolves countered with a 7-3 spurt to open up a 17-13 advantage.  Manhattan battled back within one at 20-19 before Stony Brook won four of the next five points to reach set point.  The Jaspers fought off two set points on kills by McGuinness and Anna Kitlar (Kiel, Germany) before the Seawolves finished off a 25-22 win that gave them a 2-0 lead in the match.

After Stony Brook raced out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, Manhattan went on a 7-1 run to go in front 10-8.  The Jaspers extended their advantage to 15-11 before the Seawolves won the next two points to again make it a two-point margin, 15-13.  However, the Jaspers countered with an 8-3 spurt to run their lead to seven points, 23-16.  A McGuinness kill brought Manhattan to set point at 24-17, and Behrens slammed a kill to wrap up a 25-18 set win that extended the match.

The Jaspers opened the fourth set by scoring four of the first five points, but Stony Brook countered with a 4-1 run of its own to even the score at 5-5.  Manhattan took a 13-11 lead on a kill by Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) before the Seawolves rallied for six straight points to go ahead 17-13.  After a McGuinness kill brought the Jaspers within 21-17, Stony Brook went on a 4-0 rally to close out the set, 25-17, and a 3-1 victory.  The Seawolves hit .314 (14 kills, three errors, 35 attempts) as a team in the fourth set.

Three different Jaspers recorded double-doubles, led by McGuinness's 14 kills and 16 digs.  Van Dyk finished with 13 kills and 11 digs, while Jade Gray (Boise, Idaho) had 32 assists and 13 digs.  Allie Yamashiro (Kapolei, Hawaii) recorded 20 digs to go along with three service aces and four assists, and Volovski notched nine kills and eight digs.  As a team, Manhattan hit .130 (50-29-161) in the match.

McFadden paced Stony Brook with 14 kills on .429 hitting.  Shelby Tietjen added 11 kills on .333 hitting to go along with eight digs and four blocks, while Melissa Rego tallied nine kills, 11 digs and three blocks.  Nicole Vogel had a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs, and Laura Hathaway recorded a match-high 24 digs for the Seawolves.  Stony Brook hit .204 (54-22-157) as a team.

Manhattan resumes its MAAC schedule this weekend.  The Jaspers (2-2 MAAC) head to New Jersey for a 1 p.m. matchup with Rider (8-7, 3-0 MAAC) on Saturday.  Along with Marist, the Broncs are one of two teams currently undefeated in conference play.
