Manhattan Wraps Up Rose Hill Classic With Loss

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. - The Manhattan College volleyball team (4-5) concluded action at the Rose Hill Classic with a 25-12, 25-18, 25-13 loss to Seton Hall (4-8) at Rose Hill Gym on Saturday afternoon.  Rita Welsh (Collegeville, Pa.) tallied seven blocks in the match and was named to the all-tournament team.

After Manhattan scored the first two points, Seton Hall used a 13-0 run to seize control of the match.  The Lady Jaspers put together a small rally to trim their deficit to 16-9, but the Pirates ended the set on a 9-3 run to claim a 25-12 win.  Manhattan hit -.121 in the set, posting just four kills and committing eight errors in 33 attempts.

The Pirates carried that momentum into the second set, as they built a 4-0 lead.  Manhattan pulled within one at 5-4 before Seton Hall scored the next three points to run its advantage back to 8-4.  The Pirates increased their lead to 18-10, but the Lady Jaspers scored four of the next five points to get back within five at 19-14.  After Seton Hall reached set point at 24-15, Manhattan rallied for the next three points before the Pirates closed out the set, 25-18.

Seton Hall jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, prompting a Manhattan timeout.  The Lady Jaspers scored the first three points out of the timeout to trim their deficit to 8-5, but that's as close as they would get.  The Pirates used a 5-0 run to increase their lead to 18-9, then the Lady Jaspers responded with a 5-1 spurt to cut the margin to 19-13.  However, that was the final point Manhattan would score, as Seton Hall rallied for the final five points to secure a 25-13 set win and 3-0 sweep in the match.  The Lady Jaspers hit -.057 (6-8-35) in the third set.

Jaci Rahey (West Milford, N.J.) paced the Lady Jaspers with four kills.  Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) posted a team-high 13 digs, while Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 11 digs and Aurore Kullak (Beloeil, Belgium) added 10 digs.  Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) handed out eight assists, as Manhattan had just 18 kills and 16 assists as a team.  The Lady Jaspers hit -.045 (18-23-110) in the match.

Three players recorded nine kills for Seton Hall, including Meghan Matusiak, who hit .474 on 19 errorless swings.  Matusiak also tallied 13 digs.  Sarah Osmun added a match-high 16 digs to go along with nine kills, while Krissy Wrobel had nine kills and six blocks.  Allie Matters posted 11 digs for the Pirates, who outdug the Lady Jaspers 59-42.  Olivia Trudeau distributed a match-high 32 assists for Seton Hall.  As a team, the Pirates hit .274 (41-12-106) in the match.

Manhattan returns to action on Tuesday with its final non-conference match before the start of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play next weekend.  Stony Brook (3-8) comes to Draddy Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. showdown that ends a span where the Lady Jaspers play six matches in seven days.  The match will be webcast live at www.gojaspers.com as a part of the JasperVision package.
