Riverdale, N.Y. ? Sparked by a six goal effort from Caralyn Hickey and four goals each from Julia Lavelle and freshman Chrissy Gutenberger, the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team topped Lafayette College 18-10 Wednesday afternoon at a snow ringed Gaelic Park.
Tara Convery chipped in with two goals and Cristina Tarulli added one for the Lady Jaspers, now 2-1 on the season. Phelicia VanOverbeke had four assists for Manhattan, while Hickey, Keri Morrison and Tarulli had one assist each. Powering the midfield and defensive end, Breana Leonard had five ground balls and six caused turnovers, while Morrison had four ground balls and four caused turnovers.
For Lafayette, Lauren Brown, Lauren Brown and Lisa O'Donnell had two goals each.
Lafayette (now 0-5) took an early lead less than a minute into the game, but Manhattan came right back with two goals in the next five minutes. Lafayette took a 3-2 lead at 20 minute mark, but then Manhattan pulled off a 5-0 run in the next 10 minutes ? three goals of which were by Gutenberger ? to go up 6-3, a lead the Lady Jaspers would never relinquish. Lafayette scored a goal at the 5:13, but another 3-0 push heading into the halftime put the score at 10-4 Manhattan.
Lafayette scored a goal less than a minute into the second half, but then Hickey led a 6-0 run that clinched the game for the Lady Jaspers, taking the score to 16-5. Only a 4-0 run in the last 3:45 brought Lafayette a bit closer.
“This was another all-round team effort; we played very well on both ends of the field,” said Manhattan head coach Jim Drivas.
Manhattan outshot 32-31, and Lady Jasper goalkeeper Allison Brown recorded 14 saves.
Manhattan's next game in what will be a 10 game homestand will be at noon Sunday at Gaelic Park against Long Island University.
