Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (October 21, 2007)- Caroline Morse tallied the game-winning goal at the 97:41 mark to give Manhattan a dramatic, 3-2, come-from-behind win on the road at MAAC leading Marist College. The Lady Jaspers improve to 6-5-4 (3-2-1 MAAC), while the Red Foxes fall to 7-4-2, and drop their first MAAC game (4-1-0).
The win is Manhattan's second result against a regionally ranked team, as Marist is ranked #15 in the Northeast by SoccerBuzz.com. The Lady Jaspers played current #8 Stony Brook to a 0-0 draw earlier this season.
Morse eluded a Marist defender one-vs-one after receiving a pass from Courtney Hughes, and beat the Red Foxes keeper to provide the winning margin in a game that was huge for Manhattan's post-season chances.
Marist scored the game's first two goals, finding the back of the net in the 30th and 55th minutes, with Kate Fox recording both tallies.
The second goals seemed to wake up the Manhattan offense, as Morse found Courtney Hughes wide open in the 58th minute to cut the deficit in half. Eight minutes later Hughes again found the back of the net to knot the score at 2-2. Christine Reina assisted on the goal
Alicia DeFino tallied seven saves while picking up her sixth win of the season. She currently ranks second on the Manhattan career wins list with 20 wins as a Lady Jasper.
"After Marist's second goal, we could basically see our season fading away," commented head coach Sean Driscoll. "But Courtney Hughes, as a senior, brought us back from the dead, and led us to a great comeback. We changed our formation up in the second half, and that really opened things up for us in what was a high competitive, and very emotional and passionately played match."
The Lady Jaspers return to action next weekend, closing out the home portion of their schedule with two MAAC matches. Manhattan will take on Fairfield University on Friday, October 26 at 7:00 p.m. before hosting Iona College on Sunday, October 28 at 10:00 a.m. The Lady Jasper seniors will be recognized prior to the match vs. Iona.
