New Britain, Conn. (April 18, 2006)- Manhattan dominated in every facet of the game, defeating Central Connecticut, 19-8, this afternoon at Arute Field.
Molly Pheterson (5),
Jenny Carman (4), and
Lauren Civardi (4) combined for 13 goals, while
Brenna Tinari handed out a career-high seven assists, breaking the old program record of six, set by Jess Sofsian vs. Marist on May 1, 1998.
The Lady Jaspers asserted themselves right from the start, scoring the first three goals and six of the first seven to build a 6-1 lead over the first 24 minutes. After a CCSU tally, Manhattan scored the last two goals of the half to go into the break with an 8-2 lead.
After the Blue Devils scored to open the second half, the Lady Jaspers again asserted themselves, starting a trend that would be repeated three more times over the next 18 minutes. Manhattan would answer every CCSU goal with to of its own, gradually adding to its lead.
It was during the second part of the second half that Tinari began to take on a "pass first" approach, quarterbacking the Manhattan offense as she assisted on the Lady Jaspers' final five goals.
Pheterson added on assist to her tally, while Civardi added two helpers.
Alicia Psillos also recorded a multi-point game, scoring three goals while chipping in on two more for a five point afternoon. Tinari also scored a goal for Manhattan.
Ashley Devins made 10 saves for the win, and rookie Heidi Sheffer made two saves off the bench in her first collegiate action.
Manhattan returns to action on Saturday, April 22, hosting MAAC foe Fairfield at 11:00 a.m. at Gaelic Park. The Lady Jasper seniors will be honored prior to the game, which will be broadcast by GoJaspers.com, with Ed Cohen painting the word picture.
