Staten Island, N.Y. (September 21, 2005)--Behind a season-high 21 kills by senior middle hitter
Maggie Pfeifer and a season-high 44 assists by senior setter
Lori Bambauer, Manhattan Volleyball outlasted Wagner College in five games (30-28, 30-17, 28-30, 30-32, 15-6) on Wednesday in Staten Island, N.Y.
Pfeifer, a Pre-season First Team All-MAAC selection, put together one of her best all-around performances of the season. In addition to her season-high in kills, the Missouri native hit a whopping .643 and recorded eight blocks. As a team, the Lady Jaspers out hit Wagner by over 200 points.
Bambauer was also key to Manhattan's offensive success, as she recorded 40-plus assists for the second time this season. The Lady J's have won both matches in which Bambauer eclipsed the 40-assist mark. Fellow seniors
Megan O'Dorisio and
Ashley Davis also contributed significantly to the win. O'Dorisio finished just short of a double-double, as she recorded 13 kills and eight digs, while Davis added 17-dig effort.
The Manhattan seniors were not the only Lady J's posting season-highs on the night. Freshman
Andrea Reiff pounded out a career-high 12 kills in the victory. It was the first time the Westlake native recorded double-digit kills since the 10 she posted in Manhattan's opening day victory over Wofford College.
Despite the Lady Jaspers starting the match by taking the first two games, Wagner refused to go away quietly. The Seahawks squeaked out two two-point wins to force a fifth, and deciding, game. Manhattan, however, would not let the match slip away, as they dominated game five behind four kills by Pfeifer.
Anna Mooney led the Wagner attack with 11 kills in 22 chances, while Kerry Krohn posted a team-high 11 digs in the loss.
Manhattan tries for two in a row when they open play at the Brown Invitational on September 23 at 1:00 p.m. against the 18th-ranked team in the nation, Santa Clara University. Then, shortly following the match, the Lady Jaspers square off against Stony Brook University at 4:00 p.m. The Lady J's conclude play at the Brown Invitational on September 24 at 1:00 p.m., as they face Brown.
