BROOKVILLE, NY– The Manhattan Jaspers Women's Lacrosse team (1-4, 0-0 MAAC) fell to the Sharks of LIU (1-4, 0-0 NEC) by a score of 10-9 in overtime inside Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium on Long Island on Wednesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goalkeeper Danielle Serbinski came up strong on the opening LIU draw control, logging a save roughly 90 seconds into the game.
- In transition, the Jaspers created offense with senior attack Olivia Cruthers opening the scoring in the game.
- Three minutes later, it was Cruthers again, for the insurance tally to get one past the stick of the LIU goalkeeper.
- After LIU put together five unanswered goals, Cruthers cut Manhattan's deficit to just two.
- With a minute and seven seconds remaining in the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Moira Marcozzi scored her second goal of the season, with the Jaspers trailing by two at the end of 30 minutes of play.
- The Jaspers began its comeback midway through the third quarter, with an LIU turnover by Meghan Dwan, which led to a free-positioned goal for Cruthers again.
- Entering the fourth quarter, the Jaspers' offense went into overdrive, with Cruthers cutting the deficit to just one tally, as the senior scored a pair in a span of a minute and 13 seconds against the Sharks.
- Serbinski stood tall in net for the Jaspers despite the one-goal deficit, making a trio of saves down the stretch to stave off high pressure from the Sharks.
- With four and a half minutes remaining, senior midfielder Ashley Bonitch found freshman Juliana Mahan for her first NCAA goal and the equalizer with 90 seconds remaining.
- Down the stretch of the remaining 90, and two minutes into overtime, the Sharks found the back of the net twice.
STATS AND NOTES
- Senior attack Olivia Cruthers tied a single-game career-high with five goals on the afternoon. Cruthers logged nine shots on the afternoon, with seven on target.
- Junior goalkeeper Danielle Serbinski logged 12 saves on 33 LIU shots faced this afternoon.
- Senior midfielder Emily Fiola tallied her third goal of the season and second assist of the year. She picked up two groundballs to add to her ledger.
- Senior midfielder Ashley Bonitch added one goal and one assist in addition to the four shots recorded. Two of which were on target.
- Sophomore midfielder Catie Edson picked up a team-high four ground balls on the afternoon.
