Manhattan drops season opener at FDU

Box Score

Teaneck, N.J. — Manhattan refused to give in until NK Tima's header off a free kick in the 76th minute proved to be the difference for FDU. An undermanned Jaspers side missing 2022 MAAC Defender of the Year Nassim Akki got a pair of goals from senior defender/midfielder Harry Bark which tied the score twice before Tima delivered the game winner.

Manhattan and FDU were almost dead even in the box score on this night, with FDU edging Manhattan on shots 13-12 and with both teams finishing tied at 4 apiece for corner kicks. FDU struck first when Alex Kryazhev scored in the 17th minute before Bark returned the favor by beating Knights' goalkeeper Spencer King in the 32nd minute. The second half did not disappoint with Kryazhev and Bark proceeding to exchange two more goals to knot the score at 2-2. In the 66th minute, Sebastiano Musu had a prime chance in front of the net but his shot missed to the right.

Junior goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg made his Jasper debut after transferring from Marquette over the summer. He tallied 3 saves against an aggressive FDU attack,

While the Jaspers look to round into full health, the focus will turn to a road match-up with Big East foe St. John's (0-1) on Thursday, Aug. 29 with kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m. on FloFC. The Red Storm dropped a 2-0 decision today at URI.

Coach's Angle

"We are unsettled at the moment sadly," said Manhattan head coach Jorden Scott. "We've had a few setbacks with certain players and it's caused us to still be in an experimenting phase of the season. Every team in the country is trying to figure out what their lineup is and what their rotations are."

"There was a lot on the line for them with Jamie's (Highcock) first game and for us I felt we used too many rotations and that cost us with defending," Scott said, referencing FDU head coach Jamie Highcock's first career victory.

"He (Harry Bark) suffered a really bad injury last year and he's been working hard to get fit and healthy…we figured he has the speed and quality with his left foot that he can come in from the right. He's always quality, it's just about health and fitness for Harry."

"He was big for us in moments on set pieces and that's why we brought him here. He's an experienced leader," Scott said of junior goalkeeper Ludvig Malberg.
