RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's basketball team (17-10, 10-8 MAAC) travels to Marist for a Thursday night showdown at 7 p.m. before returning home to host Iona on Saturday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day in the regular season finale.
This week, the Jaspers return to the court ranked fifth in the MAAC standings. Manhattan is on a two-game losing streak and is seeking a bye in the conference tournament next week.
The Preview: The Jaspers enter the week aiming to earn a first-round bye in the MAAC Tournament or falling to play in the first round. Both games are crucial for the Jaspers who look to be a top-four team in the league come Saturday.
The all-time series between Manhattan and Marist has the Jaspers trailing 32-7. Manhattan is on a one-game win streak over the Red Foxes. The Jaspers are 3-16 against Marist on the road. Last time out, Manhattan played Quinnipiac on Dec 18, 2023, with a 58-82 loss. Ines Gimenez Monserrat recorded 20 points and six rebounds leading Manhattan to a win.
The all-time series between Manhattan and Iona has the Jaspers tied 20-20. Manhattan is on a one-game win streak over the Gales. The Jaspers are 11-9 against Iona at home. Last time out, Manhattan played Iona on Jan 25, 2024, with a 64-58 win. Leyla Ozturk recorded 19 points and six rebounds led the way to a Jasper victory.
The Opponent: Marist has lost 12 straight games, including a 58-57 heartbreaking loss to Saint Peter's in its last outing. The Red Foxes are 5-23 overall and 3-15 sitting in last place in the league. Marist ranks third in opponent field goal percentage (38.4), first opponent free throw percentage (73.7), first in rebounds (37.4), and second in blocked shots (3.50). Zaria Shazer ranks fourth in the MAAC in scoring at 14.1 points per game.
Iona (11-16, 6-12 MAAC) is tied for eighth in the league standings and on a one-game losing streak. The Gaels fell to Niagara 86-56 last week. Iona ranks third in the MAAC in 3-point field goal percentage (33.7), third in 3-point field goals made (7.0), second in free throw percentage (73.2)
Leading the Way: Ines Gimenez Monserrat led Manhattan, who contributed 13 points and five rebounds for the Jaspers against Fairfield. Leyla Ozturk added 11 for Manhattan. Gimenez Monserrat leads the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game and Petra Juric is second with 10.2 points and 8.0 rebounds.
By the Numbers: Manhattan enters the week ranked first in the MAAC in free throw percentage (76.9), first in blocked shots (3.70), second in assists (14.07), second in assists/turnover ratio (0.85), second in scoring defense (57.0), fourth in opponent field goal percentage (38.5). The Jaspers also rank 30th in the nation in free throw percentage and 32nd in scoring defense.
Juric ranks fifth in rebounding (8.0), fourth in field goal percentage (.510), and seventh in blocked shots (1.0). Leyla Ozturk ranks second in blocked shots (1.5). Anne Bair ranks fourth in assist/turnover ratio (1.3) and sixth in assists (3.4). Nitzan Amar ranks third in the MAAC in three-point field goal percentage (.400), second in assist/turnover ratio (1.6), and fifth in assists (3.7). Jade Blagrove ranks fourth in the MAAC in free throw percentage (77.5).
