RIVERDALE, N.Y. – After a loss last week to Temple University, the Jaspers battled cold conditions as they made a comeback against LIU to win the game 8-7 in triple overtime.
After keeping it a close game in the first half of regulation, the Jaspers' defense began to slip, allowing the Sharks to amass a three-goal lead. The Jaspers picked it up in the fourth, scoring three straight goals to take the lead.
The Jaspers closed out the third quarter with a goal from Ashley Bonitch to break the 2-goal Shark scoring streak. Bonitch would go into the fourth to score two more goals, giving her a hat trick in the second half.
The Tigers began to close in on the Jaspers in the second half of the game, only allowing the Jaspers one goal per quarter, while putting up three per quarter themselves. Bonitch not only closed out the third with a goal, she opened the fourth with a pair of goals in a row, the first within the first two minutes of the quarter.
After two tense overtime periods, Julianna Iovine whipped the ball into the back of the Sharks' net with just under a minute to go.
Leading the Jaspers' offense on this frigid day at Gaelic Park was Bonitch with the game-saving three-goal streak in the second half. Not too far behind was Iovine with two goals, four ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers. Ashley Gambardella made three more saves than the Sharks' goalie, blocking off the net from the Sharks 10 times.
The Jaspers play again on Saturday, February 24, at 1 p.m. against La Salle University in Riverdale, N.Y.
