RIVERDALE, NY. - Manhattan College women's basketball defeated Siena College 60-53, at Draddy Gymnasium in their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) game of the year.
Manhattan (9-3, 2-1 MAAC) is on a three-game winning streak. Ines Gimenez Monserrat had a career-high 28 points, including six three-pointers for the Jaspers. Petra Juric recorded a double-double, registering 13 points and 14 rebounds. Nitzan Amar added 10 points and 3 assists.
"Proud of this group. Any MAAC win is a great one," said head coach Heather Vulin. "Ines was electric off the bench today, dropping 28 points. Petra battled inside getting us a double-double. Jade got six assists today. She was that glue kit to put everything together. Outstanding guard play by Anne and Nitzan."
The Jaspers set the tone in the first quarter, taking a commanding 17-7 lead. In the second quarter, Manhattan continued to pace, going into the half with a 28-22 lead. Juric led the Jaspers in the first half with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
A back-and-forth third quarter ended in Manhattan leading 42-35 going into the final period. Gimenez Monserrat opened the fourth with back-to-back three-pointers, opening up a 48-35 lead for the Jaspers. Siena responded, slowly cutting into the lead until the score was 53-48. Gimenez Monserrat responded with a layup, the final two of her 13 points in the fourth quarter. From there, the Jaspers maintained control, knocking down five of their final six free throws to secure the victory.
Siena (4-7, 1-2 MAAC) was led by Ahniysha Jackson, who recorded 19 points, as well as Teresa Seppala, who added 15 for the Saints.
Manhattan shot 38.9 percent from the field, including 22 points in the paint and 32 bench points.
Siena shot 38.8 percent from the field, including 12 points in the paint and three bench points.
Manhattan's 9-3 start is the best since the 2010-11 season (8-3), where the Jaspers finished 24-10, advancing to the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI) semifinals.
The Jaspers will travel to Connecticut to play Quinnipiac University on Saturday, Jan. 6 at M&T Bank Arena.
