RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College women's basketball team added another W to the win column as they defeated Marist College, 60-54, to secure the win, Thursday evening at Draddy Gymnasium.
The Jaspers (13-4, 6-2 MAAC) were led in scoring by Ines Gimenez Monserrat who recorded 20 points and six rebounds. Anne Bair added 14 points and Jade Blagrove added 13 for Manhattan.
Marist (5-13, 3-5 MAAC) was led by Zaria Shazer who scored 16 points and had eight rebounds, and Jackie Piddock added nine points for the Red Foxes.
"Another incredible home win tonight. I was really proud. Everybody stepping up. This team is playing with an edge," said head coach Heather Vulin. "I thought Marist made a tremendous comeback in the fourth quarter. I was really proud of the result and the way we finished the game to get that victory."
In the opening three minutes of the first quarter, both teams were unable to score. The Jaspers took control, securing a 6-2 advantage. However, Marist made a comeback and concluded the quarter with a 13-10 lead, holding a three-point advantage.
In the second quarter, Jade showcased her skills in the paint, executing impressive blocks. Anne's deep three-pointer reclaimed the lead at 19-18. Anne continued her sharpshooting with another downtown three, while Leyla contributed with baskets in the paint. Manhattan held the lead at halftime 27-23, showcasing their skills on both ends of the court.
Manhattan kicked off the third quarter with a strong performance, establishing a 32-24 lead, with 6:27 remaining in the quarter. The Jaspers displayed consistent shooting and ball control, setting a solid foundation to keep their advantage. Manhattan ended the quarter up 37-29.
In the decisive fourth quarter, Marist outscored the Jaspers, putting up an impressive 25 points. Manhattan faced a few turnovers, allowing Marist to narrow the gap to three with 1:09 remaining, with a score of 53-50. Blagrove converted on two free throws, followed by a Marist free throw, followed by a Marist three-pointer to trim the lead to one, 55-54, with 26 seconds remaining. The Jaspers were sent to the free throw line where they made the first of two, missed the second, but Gimenez Monserrat was there for the offensive rebound, and an and-one finish which was converted at the line, extending the Jasper lead to 59-54. The Red Foxes could not convert on offense and one more Manhattan free throw ended the game with a 60-54 Manhattan victory.
Manhattan shot 31.6% from the field and 45.5% from three-point. They had 14 points in the paint and eight bench points.
Marist shot 31.5% from the field and 35.3% from three-point. They had 18 points in the paint and 17 bench points.
Next up for Manhattan is a trip down the road to Iona University for a showdown this Saturday at the Hynes Athletics Center. The last time the two teams played was in the MAAC Tournament championship game last year.
