BUFFALO, N.Y. - Manhattan College picked up a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon, marking their second consecutive draw to begin 2023 conference play.
Coach Lawler thinks the team has a lot to look forward to in conference play saying, "We showed a lot of heart, fight and character to come back twice on a difficult road trip. We are happy with the point and even happier with the quality and quantity of chances on goal. I'm looking forward to the first home game of conference play next Saturday after some rest."
The Golden Griffins began scoring in the 17th minute when Meghan Heath received a pass from Jessica Whitaker and was able to find the back of the net. The Jaspers were able to answer quickly as in the 29th minute, Sami Derrico recorded her first goal of the season off a pass from Olivia McMaster. Scoring continued to be plentiful in the first half as Canisius recorded a goal in the 42nd minute off the foot of Elizabeth Cavanaugh, giving them a 2-1 halftime lead. The second half began fairly slowly, however the Jaspers were given an opportunity to knot things up in the 65th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick off a Canisius foul. Kaitlyn Cooke was given the opportunity to secure the goal and she made the most of it, scoring to tie the game 2-2. The score held final, giving the Jaspers their second point of conference play.
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded three saves on five attempts. Manhattan College was led in shots by Olivia McMaster who recorded five.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded one corner kick and had ten shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch Saturday, September 23, when they return to Gaelic Park for their first home game of conference play, against Mount St. Mary's.
