RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan beats Central Connecticut State University in Draddy. Winning their home opener 3-1. The set scores were 25-12, 25-22, 23-25, 27-25.
Today, against the Blue Devils, the Jaspers won the first two sets, and then finished up in the fourth to come out victorious.
The Jaspers dominated the first set, holding the Blue Devils to only 12 points. The Jaspers trailed at the beginning of the set, falling behind by as much as four. However, the Jaspers' offense pulled them out of this hole, going on a seven-point run, initiated by a kill from Laila Glover, with Dominique Velarde as the server. Shortly after, the Blue Devils fired off a few kills of their own, but the Jaspers went on an 11-point run, with Sarah Emmons serving.
This momentum carried over into the second set, as the Jaspers started with a 6-1 run. As the set progressed, the Jaspers widened their margin of victory to as much as eight. In the middle of the set, the Blue Devils began to chip away at the Jaspers' lead; however, it wasn't enough to dethrone the Jaspers, who won again, 25-22.
The third set saw a Blue Devils comeback, with both teams battling back and forth until CCSU emerged victorious.
The fourth and final set played out similarly to the third, with both teams going back and forth. Each team fought hard for victory, with no team gaining a larger lead than three, which was achieved only by the Jaspers. With both teams tied at the regulation 25-25, Glover scored two consecutive kills, both assisted by Emmons, to win the game.
Leading the Jaspers' offense was Camila Gomez, who scored 19 kills. Following Gomez was Mikalah Curran with 15 kills. Gomez also led the team defensively, recording 14 digs. Sarah Emmons led the team in assists, setting a new personal and season high with 44 assists.
Manhattan plays again on Saturday, September 16th, at 4:00 p.m. against Saint Peter's University in Draddy Gymnasium.
