DURHAM, N.H. - Manhattan College dropped its season opener on the road to the University of New Hampshire, 2-0. The loss gave UNH a 2-0 series lead, as the two teams met for the first time since 2016.
Coach Lawler thought his team took a step in the right direction today saying, "We played a championship program today, and after a slow start, we showed we belonged with them. We are happy with the way we competed after the start and it was a great learning opportunity for us. We'll use this to be better on Sunday."
Meghan Guarente got the scoring started for the Wildcats in the 18th minute, with a left footed shot fired inside the right post. The goal was assisted by Molly McHugh. New Hampshire struck again early in the second half when Abbie Maier recorded a goal in the 50th minute, finding the net through the lower left quadrant. Assists were credited to both Ella Dudley and Meghan Guarente.Â
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Margaret Brunk. She recorded four saves in her collegiate debut. Manhattan College was led in shots by Julia Nicholas who recorded two.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded one corner kick and had four shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch on Saturday, August 16 with a 1 p.m. match-up at Wagner.
