RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan softball sent its seniors out on a high note and closed the 2023 season with a doubleheader sweep of Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon.
The Jaspers honored their two seniors on Sunday, Marika Deemer and Madison Ihnat.
Game 1: Manhattan 7, Quinnipiac 4
In game one, Manhattan's offense did not waste any time jumping on Quinnipiac's Jaclyn Gonzalez. The Jaspers scored twice in the opening frame and four times in the second.
Maddie Weir and Megan Hedlund brought the first two runs with RBI singles to center field. Three of the four runs in the second inning didn't require hits to be brought home. Lauren Rende had the lone RBI hit, a single, that played Ihant.
Mollie Charest kept Quinnipiac off the board through the first five innings. The Bobcats recorded only two hits over the first five frames. The Bobcats struck for three in the sixth inning. A sacrifice fly got the Bobcats on the board. Two runs scored off a two-run double from Serena Fogg.
The seventh run for Manhattan came from a Gabriella Mazzotta RBI single that plated Ihant in the bottom of the sixth.
Ihnat went 1-3 with the two runs scored on senior day. Mazzotta was the lone Jasper with multiple hits. Six different Jaspers scored runs.
Charest recorded her second straight win and complete game in game one. The junior closed the year by winning four of her last five appearances.
Game 2: Manhattan 2, Quinnipiac 1
In her final appearance at Gaelic Park, Deemer fired a complete game and held Quinnipiac scoreless over the last four innings to collect the win.
The lone run Deemer surrendered came in the third inning. A leadoff double from Logan Angers started the inning. Angers later scored on a fielder's choice to make it 2-1, Manhattan.
Deemer allowed only one hit over the final four frames and retired the last five Bobcats she faced.
The senior also did damage at the plate. Deemer drove in the game's first run in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly that Gabriella Mazzotta came home on. In the second, a hit-by-pitch and a single put Jaspers are first and second for Mazzotta. The center fielder singled to left field to score Lindsey Hoag to make it 2-0 Manhattan.
The start in game two was Deemer's first appearance in the circle since April 17 at Mount St. Mary's. The win was the righthander's first since April 8 against Fairfield.
Like game one, Mazzotta was the lone Jasper to have multiple hits.
The Jaspers finished the 2023 season, winning seven of their last nine games, and concluded with a 13-35 overall record and an 8-12 mark in MAAC play.
