RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan forced extra innings in game two against Bryant on Sunday, but the Jaspers lost both halves of a doubleheader to the Bulldogs.
Game 1: Bryant 5, Manhattan 1
Marika Deemer got the Jaspers on the board first in game one with a solo homer to dead center. It was her second home run of the season.
Manhattan only recorded four more hits over game one. After Bryant took a 3-1 lead in the third, the Jaspers were able to get runners on first and second with two away in the bottom half but couldn't push them across.
In the fourth, the Jaspers tried to muster a two-out rally again. However, the Jaspers left runners at first and second after Lauren Rende struck out swinging to end the threat and frame.
The Bulldogs extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth on an RBI double and single. In the home half, the Jaspers once again had runners at first and second with two away, and they were stranded there when Megan Hedlund struck out looking.
Madison Ihnat tripled to lead off the seventh but was stranded there after Kylie Kenney struck out the next three Manhattan hitters. Kenney struck out 16 while collecting her fifth win of the season.
The five Jasper hits came from five different players. Deemer was the lone Jasper to reach twice, drawing a walk, in addition to her homer in the first.
Game 2: Bryant 6, Manhattan 5 (9 innings)
Bryant and Manhattan were tied at two after seven innings and then proceeded to score in each half-inning in extras.
Bryant scored in the top of the eighth on a Courtney Paolantonio RBI single. The Bulldogs had two runners aboard before Marika Deemer worked out of the one-out jam by getting a strikeout and a groundout.
Deemer tied the game in the bottom half when she brought in Gabriella Mazzotta. The Jaspers had a chance to win the game with the bases loaded and two out. Tajiana Pickett then flew out to center field to end the inning.
Three straight extra-base hits started the ninth for Bryant, which led to three runs and a 6-3 lead. The Jaspers did make it interesting and got the winning on base in the home half. Mazzotta doubled to left-center to bring Manhattan within one, 6-5. After Lauren Rende drew a walk, the Jaspers had runners at first and second. Kaitlin Flood flew out to left, and Deemer struck out looking to end the game.
Deemer and Maddy Weir had two hits for the Jaspers. Five different players scored the five runs. Mazzotta's two RBI brings her season total to seven, which shares the team lead.
Abby Trimble went 4-5 with 2 RBI for Bryant, and Aleix Hudson scored twice.
The Jaspers return to action on Wednesday for a single game against Columbia at 4 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
