SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The
John Gallagher Era tipped off with a 61-59 victory over Bryant on the road to start the 2023-24 campaign off 1-0. The Jaspers
Daniel Rouzan led all players with 16 points, making 8 of 13 from the floor.
Seydou Traore posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Brett Rumpel rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points, collecting a perfect 6 of 6 from the charity stripe to go along with eight points.
The Jaspers led by as many as nine points with 5:22 to go in the first after a
Perry Cowan made jumper. Manhattan never trailed again in the first half, as it held a two-point lead at intermission with a score of 35-33.
Bryant managed to take a 55-54 lead with 4:06 remaining in the game. Still, Manhattan maintained its game plan, connected on a three-pointer from
Shaquil Bender, and with Rouzan scoring the last four points for Manhattan, including making the go-ahead layup with 58 seconds left in the game, the Jaspers secured the road win.
As a team, the Jaspers shot 38.1 percent from the floor and made 80 percent of their free throws (12-for-15).
Manhattan did most of its work in the paint, coming up with 38 points down low and 16 points on fast breaks. The Jaspers held the advantage on the boards, outrebounding the Bulldogs 46 to 42.
Manhattan will remain on the road as it travels to No. 1 Kansas on Friday, November 10. The game will air on ESPN+ with a tip time of 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET. The Jaspers open up home play on Thursday, Nov. 16 at 7 p.m. versus Felician in Draddy Gymnasium.
