RIVERDALE, N.Y. – In a heroic comeback, the Jaspers beat the Red Foxes, earning them two back-to-back home wins. The final set scores were 21-25, 27-29, 25-23, 25-22, and 17-15.
After losing the first two sets, the Jaspers made a clutch comeback at the end of the third to keep themselves alive. They carried this momentum into the fourth and fifth sets to win the match 3-2.
In the third set, both teams were neck and neck as it drew to a close. The Red Foxes needed three more points to win, while the Jaspers needed six. After a timeout called by head coach Mauro Miletic, the Jaspers fired off three straight kills, bringing them halfway there. The Red Foxes stole back a point with a kill, bringing them within two of victory. With the Red Foxes serving and closing in on victory, Maike Bertens killed the volley served by the Red Foxes. This momentum carried them through to the completion of the set, scoring three straight kills for the 25-23 victory.
In the fourth set, the Red Foxes opened up strong, going on a 4-1 run. However, the momentum from the last set carried over for the Jaspers. The Jaspers began throwing down kills, ever widening their lead. The Red Foxes would not see the lead again for the remainder of the set.
By the time the fifth set rolled around, both teams were clearly tired after giving it their all. The Jaspers found themselves down by six in the deciding set. With all timeouts and challenges left, both teams threw everything they had at each other. Then, out of nowhere, the Jaspers found a hole in the Red Foxes' defense. Elenoa Sing served up three straight service aces, putting the Jaspers in the lead. With both teams shocked by the change in momentum, the Jaspers put the Red Foxes on the ropes, scoring the final three points they needed for the win.
Leading the Jaspers in kills tonight was, again, Bertens with a 27-kill game, putting her at 55 for the weekend. Mikalah Curran was not too far behind with 21 kills and two aces. Sara Emmons led the team in assists this afternoon, setting a staggering 55 for her teammates and setting a new personal record.
