POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's basketball suffered a road setback at Marist Thursday night, 56-43.
Manhattan falls to 5-9 and 2-3 in conference play while Marist improves to 6-7 and 2-2 in the MAAC.
"Early foul trouble really hurt our depth tonight," Said head coach Heather Vulin. "I thought our team battled through adversity but we continued to have unforced turnovers and on the road we can't take possessions for granted."
The Jaspers set the tone early, with the Red Fox's first trip down the floor ending in a Petra Juric rejection which was capitalized on with a Dee Dee Davis jumper in transition. The Jaspers took a 10-6 lead into the first quarter media timeout, Brazil Harvey-Carr connected on a straight-away triple while Helena Galunic contributed a jumper.
Coming out of the media timeout, the first Jasper bucket came from Anne Bair, who connected on her first triple of her young Jasper career. The quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with it ending in a 15-14 lead which was granted to them by a Harvey-Carr jumper with 13 seconds left in the opening 10.
In the second quarter, the Jaspers went on a 7-0 run in the first half of the quarter which was started by a Bella Nascimento triple. Harvey-Carr followed it up with a layup and then on the ensuring Marist inbounds, Nascimento stole the inbounds pass, turned around, and connected on a midrange, making the score 22-16. The Red Fox's responded with 6-0 run of their own which featured buckets from three different Red Foxes to knot up the score at 22.
With under a minute left, Christina Katsamouri finished through hard contact down low off a feed from Harvey-Carr. She converted on the free throw attempt to take a three-point lead. The next trip down, Katsamouri connected on a midrange from the baseline to send the Jaspers into halftime with a 27-24 advantage.
Coming out of the break, Marist put up six consecutive points, with three coming from the charity stripe to take a 30-27 lead. The run was stopped by a pair of offensive rebounds by Petra Juric, who found Davis under the basket for an easy layup (32-29). The rest of the quarter saw each team unable to create some space from the other, and Marist entered the final quarter clinging to a 36-35 lead.
Marist connected on back-to-back triples from Julianna Bonilla and Kendall Kirk midway through the final quarter to extend their lead to 44-39. From there, the Red Foxes grew the lead and the Jasper offense was stifled.
It was a spread offensive performance for the Jaspers, with Harvey-Carr leading the way with 11 points while Katsamouri contributed a season-high seven points.
The Jaspers finish the week on Saturday with a trip to Fairfield in a rematch of last year's MAAC Championship title game this Saturday at 2 p.m.
