RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Following a 1-1 week in the MAAC at home, the Manhattan women's basketball team hits the road for its next pair of conference tests, heading to Marist on Thursday and then their first look at Fairfield this year on Saturday.
The Green and White sit at 5-8 overall and an even 2-2 in conference play. Most recently, they welcomed the Buffalo teams, Canisius and Niagara, to Draddy Gymnasium last weekend. The Jaspers overcame a 10-point hole in the second half against Canisius to come away victorious, 73-68. In that game, Dee Dee Davis tied her season-high in points with 28 while Bella Nascimento and Brazil Harvey-Carr chipped in 16 and 13 points, respectively. The team shot 41.5-percent from the field and 33.3-percent from beyond the arc.
The Red Foxes of Marist will enter the meeting with the Green and White with a 5-7 record and 1-2 in the MAAC. Marist also took on the Buffalo duo, picking up a win against Niagara (63-55) but were defeated by the Golden Griffins (65-61). Most recently, Iona took them down 76-55 on New Year's Eve.
The Red Foxes (5-7, 1-2 MAAC) are led by Zaria Shazer and Kiara Fisher, who are averaging 14.6 and 13.1 points and 5.8 and 3.8 rebounds, respectively. This season is also the final season for longtime Marist head coach Brian Giorgis, who announced his retirement after 22 years on the Red Foxes bench before the season started.
The reigning conference champions, Fairfield, will get their first look at the Jaspers since last year's MAAC title game. Entering the week, the Stags sit atop the conference with an unblemished 3-0 MAAC record and an overall mark of 7-5. In the MAAC, they have taken down Saint Peter's (76-49), Iona (49-43), and The Mount (62-56).
The Fairfield offense is powered by the MAAC's leading scorer, Callie Cavanagh, who is netting 17.9 points per game thus far. Izabela Nicoletti Leite has chipped in 12.3 points per contest.
