RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan women's basketball suffered a home setback at the hands of the Quinnipiac Bobcats Thursday night at Draddy Gym, 52-38.
Manhattan falls to 7-12 overall and 4-6 in league play, while the Bobcats move to 12-7 and 7-3 in the MAAC.
"I am proud of this team," added head coach Heather Vulin. "Unfortunately, our record does not show the amount of effort we are putting into this year, especially for the preseason. We were without two of our best players because of injuries. That gave us a rocky start, and then we just had one of those seasons where every game we have had 2-4 players not available due to injury. When that happens, we cannot build the same type of chemistry, so I feel we are behind in building chemistry. Even though we lost this game, in terms of toughness, I thought this was a step in the right direction."
A slow start offensively doomed the Jaspers, with the team only mustering eight points in the first quarter and six in the second, making the score at the half 27-14 in favor of Quinnipiac. The Jaspers were unable to overcome that slow start in the second half.
Despite the slow start, Dee Dee Davis continued her ascent up the scoring list in the first quarter, passing current Athletic Director Marianne Reilly for ninth all-time. Davis finished the game with a team-high 13 points.
A bright spot this evening was Jade Blagrove, who recorded a double-double with 12 points and an impressive 17 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive end of the floor. The 17 rebounds are the most since Courtney Warley hauled in 19 against Siena on Feb. 22 of last year.
Manhattan travels just down the way for their next matchup, facing off with the top dog in the MAAC, Iona, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
