NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Manhattan fell in straight sets at Central Connecticut State on Wednesday night. Julia Menocal had a team-high 11 kills to pace the attack for the Jaspers.

Manhattan (0-3) started the match well in set one, leading 3-0 early on, and finished the opening stanza with a .222 hitting percentage. The Jaspers took a 7-6 lead on a Kelly Markowski kill, but the lead didn't last long as Central Connecticut State (4-3) scored the next eight points to take a 14-7 lead.

Trailing 22-12, Manhattan scored five in a row to trim the deficit to 22-17. Menocal supplied three kills in the stretch. The Blue Devils ended the run with three in a row to take the set 25-17.

Central Connecticut State opened the second set, scoring six of the first nine points. Manhattan rallied to tie the set at eight. Two of those points came via Camila Gomez aces. The Blue Devils broke the tie with a four-point run and built an 18-11 advantage. A kill from Isabelle Roufs closed the set with a kill which capped a 7-1 run to close.

Manhattan was on the wrong end of a fast start from Central Connecticut in set. The Jaspers would trim the lead to single digits late in the set when an error by Central Connecticut got the Jaspers to within 22-13.

Menocal added four digs to her 11 kills. The Bronx native has had 11 kills twice this season and recorded at least nine in all three games in 2022. Sarah Emmons had a season-high 19 assists. The freshman added six digs and her first two collegiate aces.

Manhattan starts the Big Apple Tournament on Friday against St. Francis Brooklyn. The Jaspers and Terriers square off at 4:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
