DOVER, Del. – Manhattan scored once in each half to pick up its second straight win on Monday night, 2-0, against Delaware State.
Manhattan (2-1) got on the board when
Sami Derrico one touched a flick-on from
Brooke Zimmer into the top left corner to give Manhattan the 1-0 lead. It was Derrico's 13
th-minute tally was her first of the season and first assist for Zimmer.
With less than four minutes remaining in the game,
Corrine Jackson curled in a corner from the near side to add insurance for the Jaspers. Monday was Jackson's first action of the season, and the sophomore made an impact off the bench for Manhattan.
Delaware State (0-6) had a pair of opportunities to tie the game in the first half. Alani Lawrence put a shot wide left in the 28
th minute. Alexis Utain forced
Kim Mains to make a save off a Hornets' corner kick with less than two minutes to play in the opening 45 minutes.
The Hornets had some sustained possession in the second half but could not translate it into scoring opportunities. Mains was forced to make just one save in the second half. That came in the 80
th minute against Gabriella Cabrera.
Mains has recorded back-to-back shutouts and has only allowed one goal through three games this season. Defensively, the Jaspers limited the Hornets to four shots, two on goal. Through three games, Manhattan has limited its opposition to 16 total shots.
Next for the Jaspers is a trip to Sacred Heart on Thursday at 7 p.m. It is the second of four straight games away from Gaelic Park.
