POMONA, N.Y. – Pete Durocher hit two home runs and Manhattan scored all eight of its runs in the first three innings to beat Iona 8-3 on Saturday in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Iona (6-41, 6-18 MAAC) scored in the top of the first before Manhattan (24-26, 12-12) rattled off eight straight runs.
Durocher hit the first of his two homers in the bottom of the second inning. The Jaspers' right fielder's 2-run shot hit the last row of bleachers in left field. The homer was Durocher's fifth of the season and put the Jaspers up 5-1.
One inning later, Durocher came up with two on and put another one over the left-field fence to extend the lead to 8-1. Durocher finished with five RBI. David Bermudez scored three times, including on both Durocher homers.
The Gaels added two runs on the seventh. Chris Mariani hit a sacrifice fly after the first three hitters reached base. Jim Kemp followed with a single up the middle. Iona stranded a pair of runners at first and second.
Kyle Lesler struck out eight Gaels over five innings for the Jaspers to collect his fourth win of the season.
Before the game, Manhattan honored its 2022 seniors and its 2011 and 2012 MAAC Championship Teams.
