Softball Drops A Pair of One-Run Games to Sacred Heart

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan dropped a pair of one-run games to Sacred Heart on Tuesday. The Jaspers fell in game one 1-0 and game two 4-3.
 
Game 1: Sacred Heart 1, Manhattan 0
The only run in the game came in the top of the seventh. Sacred Heart (8-27) got a leadoff single and a walk before sacrificing both runners to second and third.
 
Jenna Mowad then singled through the left side to score Emily Carroll from third.
 
Manhattan (6-20) didn't get its first hit until the fifth inning, when Megan Hedlund led off the inning with a single.
 
Marika Deemer got aboard with two away in the bottom of the seventh but was stranded when Hedlund struck out to end the game.
 
Jessie Rising tossed a complete game for the Jaspers. The senior struck out seven and allowed only five base runners. Sarah Lawton got the win with the complete-game shutout for the Pioneers.
 
Game 2: Sacred Heart 4, Manhattan 3
Sacred Heart (9-27) scored one run in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings.
 
The Pioneers led 3-0 before the Jaspers cut into the deficit. Kaitlyn Flood kept one fair down the left-field line for a two-run home run in the fourth. It was the junior's third homer of the season and got the Jaspers to within one.
 
Alyssa Gonzalez hit a solo homer to restore the Pioneers' two-run lead. Marika Deemer then blasted her own solo homer in the sixth to make it 4-3. Manhattan got a runner to second in the seventh but stranded them there.
 
Carly Koltko tossed a complete game for the Pioneers to pick up the win.
 
The Jaspers return to action on Saturday when they visit Iona for a doubleheader starting at noon in New Rochelle.
