Jaspers Walk-Off Twice Against Seahawks

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan walked off in both games against Wagner on Sunday in a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Seahawks.

The Jaspers also recognized Jessie Rising's brother, Michael, who suffered a traumatic brain injury; pregame as March is Traumatic Brain Injury Awareness Month. Michael threw out the ceremonial first pitch to Jessie before the first game.

Game 1: Manhattan 5, Wagner 4
After four innings, Manhattan (3-12) found itself down 3-0.

Kaitlyn Flood started the scoring for the Jaspers with a solo homer to left-center in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After Wagner added one in the top of the sixth, the Jaspers pushed three across to tie the game at four. All three runs came with two after the first batters of the frame were retired. Flood singled, then Gabriella Mazzotta singled to left. Flood came around to score on an errant throw by the Wagner second basemen. A single to right field by Lauren Rende brought in Megan Gillooley, who pinch-ran in the inning, and Mazzotta tied the game at four.

Keagan Ward tried to score from second on a single in the ninth for Wagner, but a well-executed relay from left cutdown Ward to end the inning.

After being hit by a pitch, Annie Moore got on to start the bottom half of the seventh. A groundout advanced Madison Ihnat, who pinch ran for Moore, to second before a wild pitch pushed her to third. Megan Hedlund flied out to left. Ihnat went down the line to draw throw home from the relay, and the throw got away from the Wagner catch up the third-base line and allowed Ihnat to score the winning run.

Flood finished game one 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Mazzotta was also 2-for-3 and scored once. M CHAREST earned the win after allowing one run over 3.1 innings of relief.

Game 2: Manhattan 2, Wagner 1 (9 innings)
Manhattan (4-12) got nine innings of one-run softball from Ava Metzger, and Annie Moore delivered a walk-off solo homer to give the Jaspers a 2-1 win.

Metzger (1-6) scattered nine hits and only allowed one Seahawk to get to third base after Wagner scored its only run in the second inning.

Moore scored both runs for the Jaspers. In the fourth, the senior got hit by a pitch and would come around to score after a stolen base from Kaitlyn Flood drew a throw as Moore raced home.

Neither team put runners on in the seventh. Wagner (5-14) put two runners on in the eighth before Metzger got a line out to right to end the threat.

Moore led off the bottom of the ninth with her third home run of the year that cleared the left-field fence.

Next for the Jaspers is a single game against Big East member St. John's on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
